Air Ink!

First look at the 3 photos above.  The man is drawing a  picture made with "Air Ink".  Ink made from the dirty air produced by cars, trucks, motorcycles and diesel engines!

*As you read the story, you will see words in bold type.  When you come to those words, think of synonyms for those words: think of other words you could use that mean the same thing.

A team of Indian engineers has figured out a way to bring some good from car and truck exhaust: They are capturing it and turning it into ink!
"The alarming thing about diesel generators is that they are located in the heart of very populated areas."
The idea to turn exhaust into ink, Mr. Srivastava said, came when he and his friends stopped at a sugarcane juice stall on a hot day. They noticed a wall had turned black behind the stand’s diesel generator, where exhaust emerged from a pipe.
They wondered if diesel exhaust might be used to produce paint.  Their invention, a cylinder that attaches to generators, captures 90 percent of the soot [ सोट ] particles [ कण ] from cooled diesel exhaust. The material can then be sold to ink manufacturers.  The company has so far sold 500 kilograms (about 1,100 pounds) of collected soot, which has been used to create 20,000 liters (5,200 gallons) of ink.

About 1.1 million people a year die from the effects of air pollution in India, according to a 2015 survey by the Health Effects Institute. That is about a quarter of the total number of air pollution deaths worldwide, it said.
In New Delhi, levels of the most dangerous particles in the air are sometimes 10 times higher than the safe limit, the survey noted.  During such periods when the air quality is extremely bad, the government halts construction within the city, raises parking fees to discourage driving and shuts schools to keep children indoors.

*WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM THIS STORY?
